61-yr-old visitor falls into city hotel lift duct, dies

A senior citizen who had arrived in the city to get his family friend treatment for a leg injury met with an untimely end when he fell into the lift duct of a hotel on P D’Mello Road while hunting for a place to stay.

The deceased had just inspected a room and was returning to the lobby to check in when the tragic accident took place.

Umashankar Sharma, a 61-year-old businessman from Bhopal, landed in the city on Friday morning and arrived at Sea Lord hotel by afternoon. After checking the room on the third floor, he opened the lift door and stepped in believing the lift capsule would be waiting there.

“The lift that had possibly malfunctioned was still on the ground floor,’’ said the police. The hotel staff managed to extricate Sharma from the lift duct and rushed him to Bombay Hospital, but he succumbed to serious injuries within half an hour.

The police have arrested hotel owner Ram Khanna and manager Liyaqat Khan, and registered a case under Section 304-A of the IPC for causing death by negligence.
