HC admits petition for action against SUN TV
A division bench comprising Justices F M Ibrahim Kalifullah and K B K Vasuki recorded an undertaking by the SUN TV Network that they would not continue telecast of the scenes till further orders and posted the petition to April 9.
The PIL petitioner advocate S Durairaj sought action against the SUN Network under the Provisions of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986.
Durairaj submitted he was shocked and surprised by the telecast of the "obscene scenes" from March 2-4, which were also aired in the network's other regional language channels.
He said Information and Broadcasting Secretary and Home Secretary, who were the authorities to regulate the Cable TV network, should have acted in order to maintain public order, decency and morality and stopped the telecast. The petitioner also prayed for suspending the operation of Sun TV network till the PIL was disposed.
Another petitioner A Piramanayagam also sought action against SUN TV for "insulting the modesty of women".
