Civil rights activist Irom Sharmila, who has been on a fast-unto-death for over nine years demanding withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Manipur, was re-arrested late on Wednesday.
Sharmila was released on Monday night but she continued her fast at Porompat area near here where Sharmila Kanba Lup (Save Sharmila Committee) had been launching relay hunger strike by womenfolk over several months to press the demand raised by Sharmila.
Official sources said on Thursday that Sharmila was again taken to a room of J.N. Hospital at Porompat area, converted into a jail, where she was nose fed. The last nose-feed given to Sharmila was on Monday.
She refused to take anything after her release and continued her fast before she was re-arrested.
Hospital sources said Sharmila's condition had worsened.
Sharmila began her fast from November 2, 2000 after Assam Rifles personnel killed ten civilians at Imphal airport area in an alleged encounter.
Sharmila has been released from time to time but re-arrested within two or three days time since she continued her fast unto death. The charges framed against her are attempt to commit suicide, they said.
