Man and woman charged in connection with murder of Fermoy man
A man and a woman were charged today with murdering 25-year-old Fermoy man, John McManus, at a flat in Cork city in October 2008 – amid tearful scenes in and around Cork District Court.
John Walsh, 44, of 7 Carrigmore Park, Ballinlough, Cork, replied, “I have nothing to say”, when he was charged with murdering the late Mr McManus on October 30/31 2008 at flat 1, 3 Verdon Place, Wellington Road, Cork.
Gillian Purcell, 33, of Simon, Anderson’s Quay, Cork, and formerly of Hollyhill, Cork, replied, “No comment” to the same murder charge.
On the application of Inspector Michael McGuire, Judge Con O’Leary remanded both accused in custody for a week for preparation and service of books of evidence.
The case will be sent forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court. Emmet Boyle, solicitor, was appointed to represent the two accused on free legal aid.
Purcell was arrested and charged by Det. Sgt. Eileen Foster and Walsh by Det. Sgt. Vincent O’Sullivan.
