he mayor of White Plains was charged yesterday with assaulting his wife.

Adam Bradley, who was elected last year, surrendered to police yesterday morning, hours after his wife, Fumiko, filed a domestic-violence complaint against him, The Journal News of Westchester reported.

She accused him of grabbing her left arm, placing it against a door frame and closing the door on her hand, injuring her left middle finger.

Bradley was arraigned on a third-degree misdemeanor assault charge in White Plains City Court.

He was staying with his parents, the station said.

After the arraignment yesterday, Bradley told reporters, "I have to set the record straight. I did not in any way mistreat my wife."

But he acknowledged, "There have been problems in my marriage for some time, and I have made many efforts to deal with that.

"This unfortunate matter will in no way affect my commitment to the important work I am doing for this great city."

Despite filing the complaint, Fumiko Bradley told The Journal News her husband is a "great mayor . . . and a great father, too."

"He put himself under a lot of pressure, and I couldn't handle that, too," she said.

Bradley, a Democrat, became mayor after serving in the Assembly for seven years. He and his wife have two daughters, according to his campaign biography.
