Pervy super gets ax

A convicted child rapist who for years has worked as a superintendent for several Upper West Side buildings -- where tenants claim he has tried to shake down female residents for sex -- lost his job and is moving out of his apartment there in the next several weeks.

Level 3 registered sex offender William Barnason, 57, got the boot from his boss three weeks after The Post ignited a firestorm of outrage by exposing the fiend's horrific criminal history and his access to keys to about 50 apartments in three buildings owned by landlord Stanley Katz.

"Mr. Barnason is no longer employed as the superintendent and will be moving out of the building he lives in the near future," said Santo Golino, Katz's lawyer.

Carol Engle, a tenant of who has said Barnason tried to extort sex from her after refusing to refund her rent down payment, said, "I feel like residents in the Upper West Side are safer.

"I'm glad no one here will have to suffer, they won't have to deal with Billy trying to shake them down."

Barnason served more than 14 years in prison for rape, sodomy and sex-abuse charges involving three Long Island girls between ages 5 and 7 and was released in 2001.

Katz hired him shortly afterward.

After The Post's story appeared Feb. 1, both Sen. Charles Schumer and state Assemblyman Micah Kellner proposed legislation that would bar high-risk sex offenders from working as building supers.

"The aim of our legislation is to prevent a frightening and potentially dangerous situation like this from ever happening again," Schumer said yesterday.

Because of his Level 3 sex-offender status, Barnason must register his next address with authorities.
