A teenage worker taking out the garbage at a Long Island doughnut shop has fallen into a sewage pit and died.
Police say 17-year-old Amiri Zeqiri on Sunday night slipped into an open cesspool behind a Dunkin’ Donuts in Smithtown, 40 miles east of New York City. They say there usually was a manhole cover over the cesspool, a hole that collects drainage and sewage.
Police say the teen’s younger cousin found him in about 8 feet of water and ran to a nearby store for help but when he returned the teen was no longer visible.
Suffolk County police pulled the teen from the cesspool and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Doughnut shop parent company Dunkin’ Brands Inc. hasn’t returned a telephone message left after hours at its headquarters in Canton, Mass.
