Officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday seized computers and film reels from Hyderabad Central, a popular shopping mall-cum-multiplex at Punjagutta, for non-payment of property tax since 2006. The move has given the jitters to other tax defaulters.
Hyderabad Central was due to pay Rs 2.8 crore property tax including arrears and penalty.
It all started around 11 am, when the tax wing officials of the GHMC landed at the mall and told its staff that they were seizing it. Officials asked them to disconnect the computers linked with main server as well as the billing machines. All transactions then ground to halt.
However, the puzzlement turned to anger when the GHMC staff also seized the film reels from the mall, thus disrupting scheduled cinema screenings.
The GHMC officials took away all the computers and film reels. A few hours later, Hyderabad Central remitted Rs 1 crore and promised to pay the balance within a week. The mall resumed its operations by evening.
