HC bans TV crime specials and serials

The AP High Court on Friday asked Telugu news channels not to telecast crime-based news bulletins and crime serials.

Justice Gopalakrishna Tamada gave this interim order while dealing with a miscellaneous petition filed by Mr V.V.S.S. Kameswara Rao, a practising advocate, who complained that they were terrifying people.

The orders will affect the telecast of several programmes including Crime Watch, Neralu-Ghoralu, and Crime and Punishment.

The petitioner made all Telugu news channels including TV9, Etv, Sakshi and TV5 as respondents. He urged the court to direct the news channels not to telecast visuals of crime and violence and also not to exhibit men and women in an indecent manner in crime serials.

He also sought a direction from the court not to telecast visuals of bodies in road accidents terming that they “terrorise” the public and are violative of Article 19 of the Constitution and the Cable TV Network Rule 6 of 1994. Further, the petitioner urged the court to direct the DGP to designate officials to implement provisions of the Cable TV Network Rule. While agreeing the contentions of the petitioner, the Judge issued the interim order.
