Woman steals 1.3kg of gold at wedding

n unidentified woman entered the bride’s room at a marriage hall in Chennai, India saying her daughter was not well and managed to getaway with nearly 1.36 kg of gold jewellery.

The theft came to light on Friday morning, when the family members of the bride, Priya, found the jewel boxes empty. At least 1.36kg of gold jewellery was estimated to be missing.

This triggered panic but some relatives came forward to donate their jewels and the marriage went off as scheduled.

Immediately afterwards, the bride’s family lodged a police complaint.

According to the police report lodged, during Thursday night’s reception, Priya wore all her jewels. Later, the jewels were placed in a suitcase and the bride’s sisters Manjula and Shyamala were assigned to take care of them.

Then, a woman in the bride’s party said wanted some space in the bride’s room as her baby was unwell. Soon, another woman, who claimed that her eight year-old daughter was sick, also wanted space in the room.

Manjula and Shyamala assumed the second woman was related to the groom’s family and allowed her inside.

Early in the morning, the woman said she wanted to leave the room claiming her daughter was better. Priya’s family suspects that the woman was behind the theft.

"We have asked the family to provide the video clippings to check if the woman was inside the hall during the reception," a police officer said.
