DMK to boycott Mullaperiyar panel

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the DMK’s general council held here. The party said expert panels in the past had already “submitted” that it was “safe enough” to raise the water storage level in the dam from 136 feet to 142 feet.

The DMK’s top policy making body, chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, asserted that “it is not necessary for Tamil Nadu to participate in this new panel just to reiterate that the dam is safe.” It regretted the apex court’s order as “a bid to sidetrack Tamil Nadu’s case.”

A Constitutional bench of the apex court on Thursday appointed former chief justice of India A S Anand to head a five-member high-level committee to go into all aspects of the Mullaperiyar dam dispute between Tamil Nadu and Kerala and submit a report within in six months.
