The Last Chapter is written by the young and talented writer Alicia Loh. At 13, she is perhaps one of the country’s youngest accomplished writers. I am happy for her because it was her childhood dream to be a writer, and she has done it.
What is also amazing is, despite having been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, Alicia did not give up on her dream, and with help from the Children’s Wish Society Malaysia and MPH Group Publishing she is now a writer. Right from the first page, I was completely engrossed; my finger kept turning the pages with excitement.
The Last Chapter is mainly about overcoming obstacles and broken relationships. The main character, 17-year-old Piper Hart, struggles with life, questioning the meaning of love and family. Things start falling apart after her mother disowns her. The possibility of a bright academic future also fades, and she decides to take her own life. But just when it could not get any worse, along comes her saviour in the form of Jaeson. He rescues her and gives her all the attention that she has longed for. He seems to know her deepest needs and all the things that she would not even admit to herself. But will she accept him? To answer that, you have to read the book. The Last Chapter has a way of grabbing its readers’ attention right from the beginning. Full of dramatic tension and deep emotions, it forces you to explore the meaning behind life’s adversity even as you learn more about the main character. It has an eccentric vibe to it, yet it is intriguing in every part. This debut goes for RM15 at all MPH bookstores. All proceeds will be transferred to Alicia’s medical fund.
