Anwar accuser stuns court

AFTER more than a year of delays, the sodomy trial of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim finally got under way on Wednesday with his accuser as the first witness.

In slightly more than an hour, Mr Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 25, stunned a courtroom packed with Anwar's family, friends, political allies and the media, with his account of what allegedly happened.

He calmly accused his former boss of attacking him sexually in an upscale condominium in the Malaysian capital on June 26, 2008.

After that, he said, he could no longer bear to work for Anwar and quit his job as the politician's personal assistant.

Mr Saiful was giving details of what allegedly occurred that day when Anwar's lawyer, Mr Karpal Singh, asked for the hearing to proceed behind closed doors.

High Court Judge Mohamad Zabidin Diah granted his request. Members of the public and the media will not be allowed into the courtroom when Mr Saiful resumes his testimony on Thursday.
